Okay:
Sunday is mother's day. It's one of the very few holidays I still celebrate.
Mothers deserved to be celebrated.
I face the same issue every year around mother's day though. First of all, I always seem to be painfully broke around this time. Secondly, my stepfather really raises the bar when it comes to the whole present game. Which is certainly a good thing for her, but it makes it damn hard for me to find a gift that will make some sort of impression.
One year I bought her a couple of good books to read. He bought her a pair of ruby earrings.
See?
Then now that my sister is good and settled into a fairly lucrative career, she also will throw in her heavy hat. So, I have to compete with two big spenders.
"Thank you, husband, for this matching luggage set. Thank you, daughter, for this insanely expensive handbag that I was too embarrassed to buy for myself. And thank you, son, for this very nice hat."
Earlier this year, on her birthday, I bought her an iPod, which went over very well. My sister went out of her way to complement me. "You did a very good job this year," she said when we were alone.
I haven't figured out what to buy her yet, but I am hoping that I'll be able to come up with something good. But it's going to be difficult to top that iPod.
My heightened anxiety over this is a result of my having been such a troublesome child, I think. Had it not been for my mother's unflinching insistence that I not become a waste-of-space, I probably would be in some phase of the correction system by now.
I feel I owe her a decent mother's day present.
I've gotten more and more serious about this as the years have progressed. One year, as a belated gift, I bought her three baby tees with funky little slogans on them, like, "Do you know where your boyfriend is?"
I told her she could get her "young girl on".
Those didn't go over very well.
I think my sister called me. "Claude, what the fuck did you get our mother for mother's day?"
"Baby tees."
"Baby tees? Is that supposed to be funny? Like, that's not funny. That shit is fucked up. She's your mother. You can do so much better than that."
This year, however, I'm going to separate the men from the boys. I'm going to give her something that will make her smile and improve her life dramatically.
I'm not sure what yet. But it will come to me.
Suggestions?
Thanks for reading.

Confession: I owe her some money. Maybe I could pay her back in full.

I have the same problem every year myself. Lucky for me I don't really have anyone to compete with my mom's husband usually gives her money which to me isn't that thoughtful at all it's the easy way out. I have a hard time trying to get something that won't just end up in a pile with the rest of the millions of things that my mom owns. Like you I am a little strapped for cash so I'm not sure what I will do but I plan to make something happen. I don't have any suggestions for you I'm too busy racking my own brain trying to find the perfect gift. I wish you luck. Melissa
why not get her an itunes gift card to piggy back off of the ipod you got her. you could get like a 50 (or 25 or 10) dollar itunes card and a bouquet of flowers, stick the gift card in the card holder of the flowers so it will be kind of unexpected (you could also go the extra mile and include a list of her favorite songs to download)...if she's like a lot of older people, she thinks that the ipod is snazzy but will never take the time to load songs on it...if she's hip and does load songs, this will help her get some more...
Well, Claude, I don't have anyone to compete with, but I hold myself to a certain bar as well. Being a mother now, I realize it's not really about the most material thing I can get. This year I'm getting my mother (and I) a girl's day at the spa. She'll appreciate it, it won't be that costly, and I'll get something out of the deal, too. Maybe you can aim for something like that...It's not tangible, but I'm sure she could use nothing more than a reprieve from every day. Good luck!
Man to man, let's get something straight (in front of Blogger Land):
The fact that you aren't in a correctional facility is a Mother's Day gift that no money can buy. Plus, your stepfather is just that- your mother's HUSBAND ! You two have no business competing against each other. Mother's Day became a commercial holiday because retail stores need to make money.
Men like myself buy their mothers presents all year. So every 2nd Sunday in May, I give people the finger when they ask me what I bought my mother. I'm like, "Mind ya mf'in bizness old lady". Just kidding.
Your mother probably tells her girlfriends how proud she is of you. She raised a young man who is a devoted father and that's better than any corny card or cheap flowers you could buy her. But definitely get her that i-Tunes gift card or upgrade to a video i-Pod and upload some videos on there paying tribute to her.
Tell her Happy Mothers Day for me and stay up. GREAT, GREAT post!!!!
Missy:
Thanks for nothing :-)
Heather:
I got her an iTunes card with the iPod and uploaded a bunch of junk for her. I think the novelty of it has worn off already actually. I haven't her use it since that first week.
Isha:
The spa seems like a great idea, but I don't think I can afford the kind of spa she would want. She's snooty that way.
Zack:
I don't know if I'd call not-being-in-prison a mother's day present. But I do feel you on the pressure-to-shop-for-holidays tip. As far as an upgrade on her iPod, I think I'll wait until it seems like she's actually using the one I gave her.
